These were the words used by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympics, as he awarded the first medals for alpinism in Olympic history.  These were all gold, given to all the team members, and only occurred for three Olympics before alpinism was deemed too dangerous: 1924, 1932 and 1936. Only 1932 involved an actual summit, while 1936 involved the only female, Hettie Dyhrenfurth, who set an altitude record climbing in the Himalayas.

The 2024 Paris Olympics makes history by achieving numerical gender parity and ensuring equal representation of male and female athletes. This moment will symbolize progress and equality by fulfilling a commitment for inclusion at the largest sporting event in the world.  Vanessa is excited and supportive of this effort for parity, however, what she does falls outside of the Olympics because of risk.

Vanessa O’Brien’s accomplishments fall under EXTREME SPORTS because they are too risky. The fact that she takes samples falls under EXPLORATION. Neither have accredited bodies, because the risk of death is too high. For example, during Vanessa’s summit of K2, the K2 death to summit ratio was 23%.  If we compare summiting K2 with playing Russian Roulette (assuming a six-shot revolver), the odds for Russian Roulette come to 1/6, or 17%.  Statistically speaking, playing Russian Roulette at 17% is safer than summitting K2 at 23%, and Vanessa attempted the K2 summit three consecutive years, not one.

This risk only increases as Vanessa goes to space and engages in deep-sea exploration.  While Vanessa enjoyed success on Blue Origin’s sixth manned mission, the spaceflight that followed hers in 2022, payload-only NS-23, exploded a minute after launch, triggering the launch escape system which removed the capsule from the booster. Titan’s implosion in 2023, on the way to view the wreck of the Titanic, killed all five on board at 3,800m, which is a third of the depth Vanessa attained during her dive in the Mariana Trench, as the first woman to traverse the Eastern Pool.
